My Process

Traditional Landscape Painting

I work mostly in oils, with an occasional foray into acrylic paints. Some of my paintings are done en plein air, standing before the subject. This is the most challenging form of landscape painting, as nature gives you at most a couple of hours of consistent light before the sun moves and everything looks different. Plein air demands quick thinking and decisive brushstrokes.

Much of my work is completed in the studio, permitting a more measured and thoughtful exploration of what moved me to paint. I generally work from a combination of thumbnail sketches, small color sketches, and photographs. Some are painted alla prima (at one go), while others are layered with glazes, scumbles, and opaque passages as required to get the effect I’m after.

I greatly enjoy moody, mysterious paintings in the Tonalist tradition, but more often find myself gravitating toward serene sun & cloud scenes.
